UPDATE Museum is closed for refurbishment from Feb 2017 - early 2020. From website (Dec 2018): "Northampton Museum & Art Gallery closed on Sunday 19 February 2017 to allow work to start on a major new expansion project. The museum will reopen in early 2020."
Went specifically to see the show exhibition and loved it! Very informative and loads of shoes on display. Examples from across the world, from 18th century China to the Spice Girls, via an elephant boot from Hannibal's crossing of the Alps - something for everyone!
An excellent view of society using the unique medium of shoes! A great way to connect with the the trends & moods of past generations, they are a such a personal item that become a part of their owners self expression, depicting class, gender and style. We had a great time as a family as the children could lead us around! It was the highlight of our visit to Northampton.
Northampton Council, Museum Directors and perhaps the whole of Northampton would all seem to be living on a different planet to the rest of the worlds population when they decide that a 'shoe fetish culture' is more important that preserving wonderful ancient artworks of which they were only temporary guardians (as they were donated to the community in perpetuity) for public viewing and sell them off like Del Boy and Rodney!Why can't I give this museum less than one star?
A fabulous way to while away several hours. Who would have thought shoes could be so interesting? They have many ever-changing exhibitions, recent ones include 'Horrible Histories'. Highly recommended.
